Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Detection for New Energy PACK Battery Packs

The production volume of electric vehicle batteries has significantly increased. For this new type of drivetrain technology, it is essential to extend the battery life and improve the battery performance to prevent new users from rejecting this technology due to a poor initial experience. Generally, the battery cells are pre-tested during the production process. After that, the battery cells are assembled into battery modules, and the modules are then assembled into battery packs.
Battery modules and battery packs often come with some kind of cooling channels, which are cooled by a mixture of water and ethylene glycol or the refrigerant flowing through the vehicle's air conditioning system. Moreover, the electronic modules that control the battery operation are usually also cooled to a certain extent by the mixture of water and ethylene glycol or the refrigerant. Therefore, for the cooling system, it is crucial to prevent the leakage of cooling water or refrigerant. When using a mixture of water and ethylene glycol for cooling, generally, a leakage rate of 10⁻³ mbar l/s (0.06 sccm) is set as the threshold. And the refrigerant circuit must maintain the leakage rate within the range of 10⁻⁵ mbar l/s.
Battery packs are usually equipped with a casing. And the casing generally needs to meet the IP67 (or higher) water protection rating, with its leakage rate within the range of 5×10⁻³ mbar l/s.
Advantages of Leak Testing Using Tracer Gas
Reliable leak testing through accurate, traceable, and repeatable measurements. The testing method is highly sensitive and capable of detecting tiny leaks (in the range of 10⁻⁴ to 10⁻⁶ mbar L/s). The testing is not affected by temperature and humidity. The testing process is dry, with no risk of water penetration. Both an automatic, operator-free testing process and a manual, low-cost testing process are available.
